ICYMI: Affordable Care Act Covers Record Number of Arizonans, House Republicans Want to Cut It
Ciscomani, Who Is a Member of Republican Study Committee That Called for Cutting the ACA, Refused to Say Whether He’d Vote to Repeal the Law
PHOENIX — Honest Arizona, Protect Our Care, Senator Lela Alston and health care advocates joined this week to celebrate the now 14-year-old Affordable Care Act that is providing health care coverage to more Arizonans than ever; yet, House Republicans still want to undermine the law , threatening to raise health care costs and leave more Arizonans without health insurance.
According to Cronkite News:
“The Affordable Care Act is a comprehensive health care reform law enacted in March 2010 and is sometimes known as ACA or ‘Obamacare.’ During the 2024 open enrollment period, a record 21.3 million people across the country selected an ACA Health Insurance Marketplace plan. The number of Arizonans covered by the ACA rose more than 110,000 during the year, to 348,055, also a record.”
The law also expanded Medicaid coverage, ensuring that over 400,000 more Arizonans had affordable health care coverage. The law is also very popular with a clear majority of Americans in favor of the law and its provisions.
Despite the ACA's popularity and expanded coverage, the Republican Study Committee that Congressman Ciscomani sits on, just released a new budget proposal calling for many provisions of the law to be rolled back, including the ACA’s prohibition on insurers denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.
Cronkite News continues:
“U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-Tucson, is a member of the Republican Study Committee, which recently called to repeal the ACA. In an article from the Tucson Sentinel, Ciscomani declined to say whether he supported the repeal of the ACA.”
“Affordable health care coverage has never been more available to Arizonans, and that’s thanks to the Affordable Care Act and its expansion under President Biden,” said Andrea Moreno, Executive Director of Honest Arizona. “Congressman Ciscomani needs to support the law and its expansion, and not join his extremist colleagues in calling for dismantling it.”
