Total Abortion Ban Proposed by Schweikert & Ciscomani’s Republican Study Committee

PHOENIX — The Republican Study Committee (RSC) that Congressmen David Schweikert and Juan Ciscomani are part of unveiled a budget recently that proposes a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.

In the wake of this week's Arizona Supreme Court decision in favor of an extreme abortion ban rooted in an 1864 law, Arizonans seeking abortion care will have to travel long distances out of state and incur hundreds to thousands of dollars in transportation and health care costs to access needed care. Congressmen Schweikert and Ciscomani have both criticized the decision, but the committee they’re part of would go to even greater extremes to ban abortion and access to IVF treatment nationwide.

Additionally, the RSC budget would:

  • ban mifepristone – a safe and effective FDA-approved medication that has been available for over 20 years

  • threaten health care for military service members and veterans by making it harder for them to get abortion care

  • gut funding for contraception for low-income and uninsured Arizonans

“Congressmen Schweikert and Ciscomani are trying to walk away from the Arizona Supreme Court's decision while they’re part of a group pushing extreme policies, like a nationwide abortion ban and restrictions on contraception, that force Arizonans to incur greater costs to access needed care,” said Les Braswell for Honest Arizona. “Congressmen Schweikert and Ciscomani need to prove to Arizonans that they side with us and reject extreme proposals to make abortion care and contraception access – if not impossible – more difficult and more expensive.”
