After 2nd Vote for Plan to Gut Medicaid, Ciscomani Sends 2nd Letter Saying He’ll Defend Medicaid
TUCSON — A week after voting for the second time for a budget resolution that could lead to more than $800 billion in cuts to Medicaid, Congressman Ciscomani sent a second letter to Speaker Johnson, saying that he wants to protect Medicaid in the reconciliation process.
Ciscomani sent his first letter to Speaker Johnson in February urging against cutting Medicaid in the House Budget Resolution, but has since voted twice, including last week, for the GOP budget resolution that requires $880 billion in cuts from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees Medicaid.
Independent experts point out that the only way to meet the Ciscomani-backed budget’s requirements would be to drastically cut Medicaid or Medicare. Over 130,000 Arizonans living in the Sixth Congressional District rely on Medicaid or CHIP to afford health care coverage.
“Congressman Ciscomani’s constant letters to Speaker Johnson prove he knows good and well that the only way that the budget he voted for achieves its goals is to cut Medicaid – something he promised he wouldn’t do,” said Andrea Moreno, Executive Director of Honest Arizona. “As hard as he’s tried, Ciscomani can’t fool his constituents. He needs to come clean with them and keep his promise not to cut Arizonans’ health care.”
