As Social Security Turns 89, Arizonans Demand Elected Leaders Reject Policies that Threaten Social Security & Medicare

Schweikert & Congressional Republicans’ Proposed Fiscal Commission Could Create Drastic Cuts to Social Security & Medicare

PHOENIX — As Social Security – the popular benefits program for nearly every American retiree – celebrates 89 years since its enactment, Arizonans want elected leaders to strengthen Social Security and to reject ideas like a fiscal commission designed for force cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

Congressman David Schweikert is currently cosponsoring legislation to create a fiscal commission that could lead to drastic cuts to programs like Social Security and Medicare. His fiscal commission bill was voted out of committee this year.  In addition, Schweikert has voted 12 times to cut Social Security or Medicare throughout his time in Congress.

“Hundreds of thousands of Arizonans rely on the Social Security and Medicare they earned to make ends meet and get the health care they need. The next generation deserves the same benefits and secure retirement when the time comes,” said Linda Somo, President of the Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans. “A fiscal commission paves the way to the Social Security and Medicare cuts Congressman Schweikert has long tried to enact. We're telling him firmly: do not cut the hard-earned benefits Arizonans have earned.”

“Social Security is a lifeline for many seniors in Arizona, providing essential support that helps us cover basic living expenses,” said Luci Messing, a retired teacher living in Tucson. “For many of us, it’s not just about financial security; it’s about dignity and peace of mind in our golden years. It allows us to live independently and focus on enjoying life rather than worrying about how to make ends meet.”
