ICYMI: Ciscomani Votes for Drastic Cuts That Would Hamper Health Care Access, Food Security, Small Businesses

TUCSON — Congressman Juan Ciscomani voted last week for a Republican-led continuing resolution that would have made devastating cuts to health care access, food assistance, support for small businesses, and other critical services. While the measure didn’t pass the House, it demonstrates Ciscomani’s real priorities: slashing essential programs while protecting the ultra-wealthy and corporations.

According to the White House, if Ciscomani’s spending cuts bill had succeeded:

  • 250,000 children would lose access to child care

  • 290,000 children would lose access to Head Start slots

  • 1 million seniors would be robbed of nutrition services like Meals on Wheels

  • 3.2 million women, infants, and children would lose vital nutrition assistance through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

  • 13,000 fewer National Institutes of Health research project grants, stalling research progress cancer and Alzheimer’s

  • Up to 145,000 teachers and staff could be removed from classrooms and school

  • 100,000 students would lose access to Pell Grants

  • 850,000 households could lose access to Housing Choice Vouchers

  • 1 million American workers would be denied job training and employment services, with 135,000 fewer workers gaining the opportunity of a Registered Apprenticeship

  • 180,000 workers would lose an average of $1,000 in back wages that they are owed

  • 240 Social Security field offices could be forced to close or shorten the hours they are open to the public

“Congressman Ciscomani says he’s looking out for Arizona families but then votes for extreme, out-of-touch spending cuts that hurt Arizona families striving to move up, all while sparing the super wealthy,” said Andrea Moreno, Executive Director of Honest Arizona. “It’s time he starts putting his constituents first and stops voting to cut the assistance programs that Arizonans rely on.”
