NEW AD: As Republicans Threaten Gov’t Shutdown, Retired Teacher Tells Congressman Schweikert Not To Cut Social Security & Medicare

PHOENIX — Advancing AZ today released a new ad featuring a retired teacher who lives in Arizona’s First Congressional District and who wants Congressman David Schweikert to stop voting to cut Social Security and Medicare.

The new ad comes as Schweikert travels back to DC amidst Republican threats to shut down the government to force through spending cuts that would harm Arizona seniors, including by making it more difficult for them to access their Social Security and Medicare benefits. The House Republicans’ plan includes more tax cuts for corporations and the ultra-wealthy.

Linda says:

“I taught English and was a counselor in public schools my whole career.

“I didn’t make a lot of money but I made a difference. And for decades, I paid into Social Security and Medicare.

“But David Schweikert voted to cut Social Security and Medicare 12 times and even wants to raise the retirement age.

“Congressman, we’ve earned our benefits and the last thing you should do is take them away.”

Almost 1 in 5 Arizonans rely on Social Security benefits—approximately 1,468,715 million people. AARP estimates that 45 percent of Arizona residents 65 and older rely on Social Security for at least half of their income.

Congressman Schweikert also voted against the Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed into law last year. The Inflation Reduction Act empowers Medicare to negotiate the price of the most commonly prescribed medications and Arizonans on Medicare will see their out-of-pocket prescription drugs capped at $2,000 per year.
